GNSS Engineer (m/f/d)

  • ESOC Darmstadt
  • Permanent
  • Full-time

SCISYS Deutschland GmbH in its Engineering Service business provides professional engineering and consultancy services supporting space programmes and missions. Our team is composed of university graduates and experienced professionals, comprising some of the most knowledgeable and dedicated engineers across Europe. Our services cover the whole life cycle of space programmes from early concepts to operations.

Our Space Division provides a dynamic, supportive and friendly atmosphere in which you are encouraged to lead with initiative. Moreover, we actively manage your professional development, training and career progression.

Your Tasks

Navigation Operations Services, executed for several ESA and 3rd party customers in parallel, process data from a combination of a number of GNSS receiver networks, including the ESA network plus optionally sub-networks providing data by contractual agreement and publicly available data (CDDIS). The data are processed in batch mode or in real-time, in ESOC’s Navigation Facility. Service products typically include orbit products (restitution and prediction) and high-rate clock solutions both for the ground and satellite clocks. Beside (near-) real time products enhanced-accuracy off-line or final products may be delivered, as well as additional or auxiliary products (station coordinates, geophysical data –e.g. Earth Rotation Parameters - ERPs, satellite properties, etc.).

The general activities to be supported by the service are (depending on the phase of the mission):

  • Navigation Operations Engineering service
  • Navigation Experimental Operations
  • Galileo Performance Analysis
  • Galileo Constellation Analysis
  • EGNOS Performance Analysis
  • Navigation System Definition service
  • Navigation Algorithms service
  • POD engineering support and consultancy
  • GNSS station engineering
  • Range Integrity Monitoring Stations (RIMS) deployment
  • Maintenance and upgrade of SW
  • Ionospheric modelling

The task of the service provider will cover the following areas:

  • Support in the preparation of future missions, services and products related to multi GNSS based precise orbit determination and high accuracy services:
    • support in the preparation of project proposals
    • definition and development of processing strategies
    • support to definition and elaboration of external study activities
    • simulations and performance analysis
  • Development of new GNSS un-differenced observation models and related concepts for ambiguity resolution in order to achieve the highest possible accuracy for navigation and precise orbit determination solutions
  • Development of new algorithms and concepts related to GNSS based precise orbit determination and high-accuracy services including pure kinematic precise orbit determination for single satellites, formation flying satellites and satellite constellations in different orbital regimes
  • Software development and maintenance for GNSS based precise orbit determination and high accuracy services
  • Support to project operations and related data processing
  • Operation of GNSS POD
  • Operation of ESOCs UTC realisation

Your Profile

Essential Requirements:

  • Engineering university degree in  the field of astronomy, mathematics or physics
  • Skills to apply knowledge to develop solutions to technical  (mathematical and dynamical) problems in cooperation with customers and other experts

  • Coordination and interaction with other service providers in the fields listed in the requirements.
  • Ability to work independently
  • At least five years of demonstrated experience
  • Very good knowledge in GNSS observation modelling
  • Very good knowledge in GNSS navigation algorithms
  • Very good knowledge in GNSS based precise orbit determination
  • Very good knowledge on multi GNSS processing
  • Very good knowledge of the NAPEOS software
  • Good knowledge on GNSS receiver system calibration
  • Good knowledge on GNSS time synchronisation

Desirable Requirements:

  • Familiarity with the ESOC environment
  • Familiarity/experience with Navigation tasks
  • Experience in dealing with external interfaces
  • Experience with Linux, network services and protocols, and system administration
  • Ability to multi-task efficiently; working on multiple activities; multiple missions simultaneously.
